Special Agent (SA) Steve Determan has over 22 years of law enforcement, intelligence, security and investigative experience. He entered the United States Air Force as a Military Policeman in 1993. During his eight years of Active Duty service, he served in escalating positions of responsibility including base entry control, aircraft security, SWAT Team Member, headquarters security, hostage negotiator, physical security inspector and personal security assistant/bodyguard to the base commander. SA Determan was also a Military Working Dog (K-9) Handler, serving both as an explosives and narcotics detector at different times during his service. He completed his military service at Andrews AFB, Maryland as a member of the Presidential K-9 Team where he provided explosives detection for Air Force One.
From 2004 to 2010, SA Determan served in the Air Force Reserves as a Criminal Investigator/Special Agent with the Air Force Office of Special Investigations (AFOSI).
From 2004 to 2007, SA Determan served as a Polygraph Examiner for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).
In 2007, SA Determan accepted a position as a Criminal Investigator with the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA). During his seven years with the BIA, he worked various assignments including Inspections, Internal Affairs investigations and Narcotics.
In 2014, SA Determan joined the Department of the Interior, Office of Inspector General (OIG) where he currently works in Lakewood, Colorado. SA Determan is a federally-certified Polygraph Examiner and helped develop OIG’s own Polygraph Program. SA Determan is also an Adjunct Instructor at the Inspector General Criminal Investigator Academy where he teaches classes on Interviewing, Detecting Deception and Identifying and Analyzing Verbal and Non-Verbal Behaviors. Recently, SA Determan led a team of other OIG Investigators in creating an extensive “Investigative Interviewing” training course for all OIG Investigations personnel.
SA Determan holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science from the University of New Mexico. He currently holds professional certifications as a “Certified Fraud Examiner” and a “Certified Forensic Interviewer.”
